We love working on hospitality projects that aim to create something special for their clientele. This was the intention for the design of Waterslide Bar, Melbourne’s latest cocktail lounge, and we had a great time working with the wonderful Techne Architecture on the project.
Waterslide Bar takes its name from a feature that once stood in Melbourne’s Southbank precinct. In the early 1900s, the location was home to an outdoor amusement part, complete with a circus, an ice-skating rink and a waterslide.
The project brief was to create a sophisticated cocktail lounge, with a moody atmosphere where clientele could feel comfortable and relaxed. It also needed to have a ‘wow’ factor bar aesthetic.
Techne took inspiration from American speakeasy bars of the 1920s, opting for tones of gold, deep red and purple. Dark timber is used throughout the space and flowing curtain, a stunning spiral staircase, banquette seating and reflective metallic mirrors help to create a boutique lux experience.
The Waterslide Bar design also highlights the beautiful cityscape, with a large wraparound balcony and the addition of bay windows.
Bianca Baldi, interior designer with Techne, tested and approved furniture to ensure it was the perfect fit for the project. “We have a great relationship with SBW and love their Australian-made, quick lead-time furniture range and their ability to customise their products to suit every project,” says Bianca.
Our Jac and Oscar Chairs were selected for the nook areas of the bar, with a fabric selection of bark burgundy hues to complement the space. Our Array Stools also add pops of colour and our Lili Coffee Table was chosen for its versatility – it’s wide enough to accommodate large groups and food platters.
Our Baso Bar Tables were selected for their simple elegance and our Baso Coffee Tables were customised in two sizes to fit in certain banquette areas. They were also powder-coated in a metallic bronze to tie in with the bronzed mirrors, timber paneling and brass highlights.
Waterslide Bar is a sophisticated, contemporary space that embraces the heritage of the past. It was a pleasure to work with Techne architects to help bring their vision to life.
